In metal building industry, consideration for erection is seldom taken in the design process simply because it is not practical and will unnecessarily result in a heavy and bulky structure. In addition, the main structures are always designed with the assumption that bracing provided either by secondary members, struts or by floor/roof diaphragm will be present at all time. None of the above are true. This is why instability and buckling are likely the predominant modes of failure of steel members during erection due to lack of bracing members and it can spell a disastrous outcome.
Extra care and attention are also required when dealing with deep, heavy trusses or long and slender steel members, different pick points will exert different stresses within the structure which can lead to a premature buckling followed by an unexpected collapse.
